WORKSHOPS - 2nd Sports Development Conference - 12 & 13 June 2008

The following one and a half hour sessions will be offered three times over the course of the two days, providing delegates with the opportunity to attend three of the six sessions.

WS1  Training Peer Leaders and Coaches

The crucial role of peer leaders and coaches in working with communities and young people to promote sports development, life skills, and education through sport is central to this workshop.  The session will include practical demonstrations to illustrate how development projects in different parts of the Commonwealth are approaching both training and delivery.  Speakers will include representatives from the Caribbean and Africa.

WS2  Engaging Communities – Community Clubs

This workshop looks at how community development approaches are being adopted by sports development initiatives to promote the development of community clubs for young people where organised sport has previously had little role to play.  This session will also look at how initiatives in South Africa and, a new approach to multi-sports clubs in Glasgow are not only successfully promoting increased levels of sports participation, but equally providing opportunities for addressing issues such as HIV/AIDS, citizenship, education, gender equality and young people at risk.

WS3  Empowering Girls and Women through Sport

Exploring how sport can be effective as a tool for female empowerment by challenging gender stereotypes and breaking down entrenched attitudes forms the basis of this session.  In many communities, girls are not encouraged to become involved in activities and structures.  This Workshop will highlight projects where sport is providing a supportive environment for girls’ participation and for dealing with sensitive issues.  It will also highlight some positive role models in Commonwealth Games Associations and National Olympic Committes in Africa where women are now playing a leading role.

WS4 - Creating pathways for talented Youth

This workshop will highlight how sport is being used both as an instrument for community and educational development and as a vehicle for coaching, identifying talent, creating pathways, and developing elite teams.  Speakers from Scottish Sports Futures, the MYSA project in Kenya will demonstrate the importance of peer leaders and role models, in this work, while making the best use of limited resources.

WS5 – Community impact of Multi-Sport Events

Multi-sport events can provide the catalyst to encourage individuals, organisations and policy makers to bring about change within communities.  The community legacy benefits from staging events such as the UK Special Olympics and the South Pacific Games and looking forward to the 2011 All African Games, in areas such as volunteering, equalities, and training for employment will be highlighted.

WS6 – Organisational sustainability for Sport-in-Development

Many sport-in-development organisations are now in their second decade and are at the forefront of a maturing field. Consequently, it seems an appropriate time to explore several aspects of the relationships between such organisations and often long standing funders. This workshop will explore the changing nature of these relationships, the dynamic nature of mutual expectations,  approaches to the definition of local and non-local needs, perceptions of the mutual responsibilities of  partnership and accountability, the balance between organisational and programme development, perspectives on what constitutes success and  expectations of sustainability.

Your choice of workshop should be indicated on the Registration Form.  As WS6 is not on the form - simply indicate in writing on the form
