Family History at the Mitchell
Archives and Special Collections in The Mitchell holds some unique resources for the family historian. You can use these to find out more about your ancestors and how they lived.

Our records include:
- Census returns (microfilm copies) for 1841 to 1901 for counties in the west of Scotland
- Old Parish registers (microfilm copies) for counties in the west of Scotland from the 17th and 18th centuries.
- Burial records including cemetery registers, monumental inscriptions, obituaries and registers of deceased seamen
- Poor Law archives for Glasgow and other areas in Strathclyde - providing unique information about paupers, their families and life in 19th and early 20th century Scotland
- Church archives including large numbers of baptismal registers from before 1855
- School archives including hundreds of admission registers from 1873 onwards
- Burgess Rolls for Glasgow from 1573
- Details of local government employees, including the police and teachers
- Membership archives of the Glasgow Incorporations of Trades such as the masons, wrights, gardeners, skinners and others
- Archives of property ownership - including registers of sasines for the Burgh of Glasgow from 1694 and from 1781 for others areas in Strathclyde
- Voters and Valuation Rolls
- Family and estate archives with information about the landed families and their tenants
- Directories relating to Glasgow from 1783 until 1978
- Evening Times Roll of Honour of service personnel who were reported lost, missing or wounded during the First World War

Guide to Scottish Newspaper Indexes
Newspapers can be a useful resource for family historians, especially for obituaries or birth/death/marriage announcements. This online guide lists details of Scottish newspapers tiles that have been indexed. It includes:
- type of index
- dates covered
- holding locations
Printed, electronic and online indexes are all included and you can search by newspaper title and keyword. You can also browse all titles or by area.
