Local History Resources at The Mitchell

 

Ever wondered what your area looked like? Or perhaps you are curious about who used to live in your house? Archives and Special Collections have many resources that can assist you in researching your local history.

 

 

 

The best way to start is by undertaking as much background reading as possible on the area in which you are interested.

 

The Glasgow Collection contains many books and articles on all parts of Glasgow as well as its history.

Researching your family history? Fancy a trip down memory lane? This site will bring Glasgow's past to life for you.

 

The Virtual Mitchell features photographs of Glasgow's buildings and streets as well as people going about their daily lives. Most of the images are from Archives and Special Collections at The Mitchell.
Some are from Glasgow Museums and some have been kindly lent by private owners.

You can search by area, street, subject or browse through all the photographs.

TheGlasgowStory web site relates the history of the city of Glasgow in words and pictures.  The site is divided into 6 historical periods, each with its own introduction, and then further divided into 'themes' such as Everyday Life and Buildings and Cityscapes. The site also has thousands of images relating to the city's places and people which can be searched.
