Archives of County Councils in the West of Scotland
 

County Councils

 

County councils were established by the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1889 and their functions included health, education, poor relief and roads. They were abolished in by the 1973 Local Governement (Scotland) Act and their powers transferred to Strathclyde Regional Council.

 

Archives and Special Collections hold the records of the following West of Scotland county councils:

 

  • Bute
  • Dunbartonshire
  • Lanarkshire
  • Renfrewshire
  • Stirlingshire (part of)

 

 

The records include:

 

 

 

  • administrative documents: minutes and other records relating to county council functions including water, police, fire, electoral registration and valuation, planning and building control
  • commissioners of supply: minutes and some early valuation rolls from the 18th century
  • turnpike trusts from the 18th century
  • statute labour trusts from the 18th century
  • parochial boards: records of the poor law authorities from 1845
  • records of school boards and successor authorities
