Map Collections in the Mitchell

The Mitchell holds 35,000 sheet maps and 300 atlases ranging from a 1647 edition of an early world atlas, Theatrum Orbis Terrarum by the Dutch publisher Joan Bleau, to current editions of maps published by the Ordnance Survey.

Our coverage is best for the Glasgow area, very good for Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire and Dunbartonshire, good for Scotland but less detailed for the rest of the UK.

Our collections include:

  • Glasgow maps of all periods, with early maps of Glasgow dating from the 12th century until 1850
  • special map collections including the Cairns Mitchell collection of early maps of Scotland and General Roy's Military Survey of Scotland, 1747-1755
  • Ordnance Survey maps covering most scales and areas, 1856-present day
  • Bartholomew’s leisure maps, 1990
  • Admiralty Charts, street maps and a collection of postcards
