The Mitchell boasts many exceptional items and the collections include rare books and manuscripts as well as the City’s archives, which date back to the 12th century. These archives tell us not only about the city of Glasgow itself, but also of its place in the wider world through the records of shipbuilders, merchants, soldiers, missionaries and explorers.

The 'Treasures of the Mitchell' include: the world’s largest Robert Burns Collection and the Jeffrey Library, which contains many beautifully illustrated volumes on travel, literature, art, architecture and natural history, including the impressive 'Birds of America' series of prints by J.J. Audubon.

The Glasgow Collection tells the story of the people of Glasgow and explores the fascinating history of the city with more than 50,000 books, maps and local newspapers.
