Book groups are fun whether you're the person who reads the cereal packet if there's nothing else, or have lost the reading habit and would like to kickstart it!

Glasgow was the first authority in Scotland to host a regular poetry discussion group and a poetry group now meets regularly in The Mitchell

An exciting and varied programme of book-related events includes key annual dates such as World Book Day and National Poetry Day.

We also promote book awards and prizes such as the Orange Broadband Prize for Fiction, by highlighting the longlisted, shortlisted and winning books, taking part in voting and discussing the titles in our book groups. Copies of the 2008 longlisted titles will be on display in Dennistoun, Hillhead Langside and the Mitchell libraries and can be borrowed from all Glasgow libraries.

The Clare Maclean Prize for Scottish Fiction is awarded to the Scottish writer who, in the opinion of the judges, has written the best novel first published in 2007. This year's winner is Dan Rhodes for his novel Gold.
