Ignite Playwriting Competition

Playwrights' Studio Scotland competition

IGNITE Playwriting Competition

After eight Inspire Playwriting Workshops in both Glasgow and Edinburgh attended by 163 people - over 70 play scene entries were received and read by Julie Ellen, Creative Director of the Playwrights' Studio and 3 Associate Playwrights - Christopher Deans, Anne Marie DiMambro and Douglas Maxwell.

Along with Aileen Ritchie, Writer In Residence at Glasgow Libraries, they selected a shortlist of six scripts whose authors took part in a day of activity at the Mitchell Library on Saturday 18th November 2006.

Each script was performed by actors and each playwright was interviewed by the judging panel.

The winner is Karen Barclay, whose work in progress "To Their Ugly Guardians" explores the relationship between a feisty 15 year old and her erring teacher. Karen will receive six months focused dramaturgical and directorial advice, support and training to develop her work into a full length play. A rehearsed reading took place at Glasgow's Aye Write! Festival in February 2007.
